Digital Retinal Pictures help us to monitor changes in the retina. The fundus (the back of the eye called the retina) above is normal. The dark area is called the macula, which is the most sensitive part of our vision. The optic nerve (shown with the blood vessels emerging from the middle) is where light is transmitted to the brain, which is interpreted in the brain as "vision". We are also able to detect certain systemic diseases in some individuals such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperthyroid, high cholesterol, etc. We are then able to compare annually to monitor eye health for many years to come.
